This is a rare one, straight from the Kevin Barry personal family archives. it’s a photo print of Kevin with his family in Tombeagh, Carlow, c.1910
Kevin was about eight in this photo. At the back of the picture we have (from left to right) Michael Dowling, Pat Dowling and Jim Dowling, all uncles to Kevin. Young Kevin is in the middle, sitting on his Aunties lap. While Kevin’s Mother, Mary Dowling, is two places from his left.
The rest of the children are Kevin's brother and sisters.
Kevin Barry joined the IRA when he was 15 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion of the Dublin Brigade. He lived with his Uncle Pat above Dowling's shop at Leonard's corner on the South Circular Road. Kevin was executed at the tender age of 18 in Mountjoy Prison. The Irish Government in 2001 announced that Barry was to be interred in Glasnevin Cemetery. He was given a State Funeral and interred at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin. He was the first person executed in the War of Independence. Lads like Kevin did free Ireland...
