Description

Farmers strike in Dublin poster dated 20th of April 1939. The strike was probably due to new constitution that Éamon De Valera introduced in 1937. He wanted Ireland to become a fully independent and a self-sufficient country, free from the influences of Britain and other countries. The tariffs that he erected around the country in order to protect Irish produce actually had the opposite effect and Irish produce became too expensive and unappealing to people and businesses outside of Ireland. So the farmers were probably striking in protest of declining sales of their goods.

In 1930’s Ireland, farming was a huge employer, so one can only imagine that there was a large turnout in Dublin for this event.

The print mentions well known places around Dublin such as Smithfield and Red Cow Lane.

We are delighted to present these fascinating rarities of old Ireland for you to own. We have added a 'aged look' to this print which creates a stunning atmosphere when framed.
