Very early image of the border shortly after becoming established on our island. The boundary between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland first came into force after the War of Independence in 1921. Manned by 2 policemen as a working man and his pony and cart wait for clearance. The border divided Ireland for 360 kms (220miles). It was never necessary to produce a passport to cross the border, but during 'The Troubles', there was a British military presence at all border crossings.
