Description

Come one, come all to the Athy cycling and sporting event. If your bike is in sound order and good condition and if you have 1 shilling in your possession for entry fee you can consider yourself eligible for this event. Make sure that your wheels are well pumped and your axles well oiled and get a good feed of porridge early in the morning. This will sustain you for a testing day.

On a serious note: This was shortly after the invention of the pneumatic in tyre by John Dunlop in May Street, Belfast, which made the ride considerably more comfortable for long journeys. The pneumatic tyre was invented by Dr Dunlop who was attempting to make the bicycle more comfortable for his son. My, my, imagine that. Another leading world brand was born on this wee island!
