Dublin Metropolitan Police - £1000 Reward Poster - Jewels Stolen from Dublin Castle
The jewels contained in the Castle were not the British Crown Jewels, but the Irish Crown Jewels. They're were the regalia of The Order of St. Patrick as well as jewellery in the amount of £1,500. Although this huge reward was offered, the items were never seen again. On the 10th of July 1907, Ireland was expecting an important visitor - King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Four days earlier, on the 6th of July 1907, the jewels were discovered missing. The visit went ahead but the theft is reported to have angered the King. Arthur Vicars, the Officer of Arms of Dublin Castle, stored the jewels in his office when in fact they were meant to be transferred in a safe to a newly constructed strong room in the castle. The safe could not fit through the strong room door. A blunder no doubt which cost us our Crown Jewels! Arthur Vicars was assassinated on 14 April 1921.
