Description

Superb protest poster from May 1891 showing a fine patina of times gone by. The event was organised by the Gasworkers Union and the Dublin Trades Council in April 1891. The Demands: An eight hour day for the workingman. A show of solidarity is required from all trades to assemble at Beresford Place at 3 o'clock sharp. The march will be six deep from Beresford Place on to O'Connell Bridge, Westmoreland Street, Dame Street, Thomas Street, Steven Street and on to The Phoenix Park for a mass meeting in The Nine Acres. This antiquated poster is like a roll call of the old trades and streets in Dublin:

Ancient Order Of Foresters
Engineering Trades
Gas Workers union
Furnishing Trades
Railway And Tram Men
Coach And Harness Trades
The Printing Trades
The Building Trades.

The overall event attracted over 17,000 people.
