This atmospheric poster captures all the magic and excitement of the early cinema days in Ireland. The Savoy Cinema in O'Connell Street, Dublin was a magical place where young and old could be transported via the silver screen to places and adventures you could only dream about. Those were the days of the silent screen and as you can see from this poster the cinema had a fine organ and an organist providing music to enhance the action on the screen. The youngsters saved their pennies and looked forward all week to their visit to "the pictures" as they called it.
There was always "the good lad" and "the bad lad". "The good lad" would always wear a white hat and "the bad lad" would always wear a black hat! The youngsters would shout at the screen warning "the good lad" that "the bad lad" was sneaking up on him. Talk about audience participation! The poster also advertises the Savoy cinema on Patrick Street, County Cork. Cinema prices, restaurant opening times and ‘The Perfect Savoy Ventilation System’!
