Bono having a Guinness, Dockers Pub, 1986
Bono having a Guinness in his local 'The Dockers' Pub, Dublin. 1986. Photo from Stephen Wynne. A not so popular thought re Bono; I find it strange how Bono is so undervalued in Irish society. Most people I speak to have little positive to say about him. Really sad. I am not a fan of his music but he is one of our more talented and decent country men of the last 50 years. I know he can be totally cringy at times, and his world statesman role often brings up the question of hypocrisy. But he made it possible for all Irish men to dream, hope and believe that ordinary people of this small part of the world could be more than a labourer, barman, farmer or whatever background they come from, to make a difference on this planet. I think it would be quite sad if peoplewait until he's gone before giving him the appreciation he deserves.
