George Best
Today we remember George Best who was born on this day in 1946. The “Belfast Boy” was undoubtedly the finest footballer Ireland has ever produced and possibly one of the top ten players ever. Best was discovered by Manchester United scout Bob Bishop. Bishop sent a telegram to United manager Matt Busby stating “I think I’ve discovered a genius.”He was not exaggerating. The slight, shy Belfast lad made his debut as a 17 year old for United on 14 September 1963. For the next ten years, he lit up the football landscape, before alcohol took its toll. Unfortunately, Best’s hedonistic life style and poor lifestyle management saw a wonderful footballing genius lose motivation for football. Best had numerous falling outs with Manchester United before being finally released in January 1974. He played for 11 different clubs in following years including Cork Celtic. Best lived the pop star life to the full. In one of his most famous anecdotes, he tells of a waiter delivering champagne to his hotel room where thousands of pounds of casino winnings and Miss World lay on the bed. The waiter asked: “Mr. Best, where did it all go wrong?” !! The footballing genius didn’t know how to handle fame and was consumed by the scourge of alcoholism. He died in 2005. His funeral in Belfast drew an estimated 100,000 people. Click -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYU0KsGLuxE#t=93
