Today in Irish History. April 25th, 1916 - Easter Rising, Day 2 One day after the Proclamation of the Irish Republic is read by Pádraig Pearse on Easter Monday and British authorities begin to take action. By the end of the day 7000 additional troops arrive into Dublin from Belfast and the Curragh. Martial law is declared by Lord Lieutenant Lord Wimborne and power is handed over to military authorities. Up to this point occupiers of the GPO see little direct action, apart from incoming British artillery. Photo: British mounted troops arrival in Dublin, 1916
