The Irish Proclamation was a document issued by the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army during the Easter Rising in Dublin which began on the 24th of April, 1916. The Rising was an attempt to gain independence from British rule and turned the streets of Dublin into a war zone for the best part of a week. In the proclamation, the Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, styling itself on the “Provisional Government of the Irish Republic” proclaimed Ireland’s Independence from Britain. The reading of the proclamation by Pádraig Pearse outside the General Post Office (GPO) on Sackville Street (now called O’Connell Street), Dublin’s main thoroughfare, marked the beginning of the Rising. It stated that Pearse and his volunteers are “supported by her exiled children in America”.
While the Rising was in a sense a failure with most of the leaders captured and executed, it did act as a spring board for the War of Independence which brought about the foundations of the Irish Republic in 1922.
