Tipperary v Dublin, Croke Park, 21st November, 1920.
The Tipperary v Dublin match has gone down in history as one of the most shocking of all the incidents during the War of Independence. Earlier that day, Michael Collins dispatched IRA operatives to assassinate undercover British agents based in Ireland at the time. The IRA killed 12 British Army officers, 1 Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and a civilian informant that morning. In retaliation, British soldiers travelled to Croke Park and opened fire on innocent spectators at the Tipperary v Dublin match in Croke Park that afternoon. They killed 14 citizens in the Stadium and beat to death 3 IRA suspects later that day. One of the players, Michael Hogan, the Tipperary team captain was also shot dead. The Hogan Stand is named in his memory.
