Description
The Dublin Fire Brigade, a reassuring sight. The history of fire fighting in Ireland goes back over a thousand years. In 1305, such was the danger that the Common Council of Ireland issued that any person found responsible for a fire 'shall be arrested and cast into the middle of the fire'.
The engines you see here are the early models of Leyland Fire Engines. They took over from the horse drawn engines, which were eventually decommissioned in 1925. The Brigade attended the fire at the Customs House in 1921, as well as many incidents during the 1916 Rising, War of Independence and Civil War. As we know, brave fire fighters have put their lives on the line down through the years and in the present day in all corners of the world they have not been found wanting. The heritage of courage lives on...
