Rare 1881 street notice which calls for Irish Tenant Farmers to pay "No Rent until the suspects are released.”
It states “The man who pays Rent (whether an abatement is offered or not) while PARNELL, DILLON etc., are in jail, will be looked upon as Traitor to his Country and a disgrace to his class". The people “in jail” relates to Irishmen Charles Stuart Parnell, and his party of lieutenants, William O'Brien, John Dillon, Michael Davitt and Willie Redmond. They were imprisoned on the 13th of October 1881. Parnell attacked the ‘Land Act’ in his own newspaper the ‘United Ireland’. In prison, Parnell and his lieutenants signed the ‘No Rent Manifesto’. In this, it called for Irish Tenants to refuse to pay their British landlords who had been given stolen Irish land by the British Empire, who the poster calls “LAND THIEVES.”
