The caption across the bottom reads; “Himself and his headman Paddy Murray in Tom Dreaper’s stables, Greenogue, Kilsallaghan, Co. Dublin. He reads reasonably well for a horse.”
Arkle was a famous Irish thoroughbred racehorse and regarded as the greatest steeplechasers of all time. He won many races throughout his racing years including the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Powers Gold Cup and Irish Grand National. Arkle became a national treasure in Ireland. His strength was jokingly said to have come from drinking two pints of Guinness a day! At one point the slogan “Arkle For President” was written on a wall in Dublin. He was often referred to as “Himself” and the story goes that he received items of fan mail simply addressed to “Himself, Ireland”.
Today, the government owned National Stud in Co. Kildare has the skeleton of Arkle on display.
