One of the best preserved snugs in Dublin at Toners pub on Baggot Street.
Sometimes referred to as "confession boxes", the snug is a small enclosed seating area usually located beside the bar with a small hatch window where bartenders can privately serve drinks. Historically, snugs provided a private space where patrons, particularly women, priests, or others who preferred not to be seen, could enjoy a drink without being visible to the rest of the pub's clientele. This particular snug in Toner's is where W.B. Yeats and Oliver St. John Gogarty famously met for a sherry. Like this one, snugs often had locks for added privacy. Many snugs were ripped out in the 1970’s when they went out of fashion but there are still lots of great examples like this one to be found around the country...
