The ICA was a group of trained trade union volunteers in Dublin for the defence of workers demonstrations. It was formed by James Larkin and Jack White. Other famous members later joined including James Connolly, Sean Casey, Constance Markiewicz and Francis Sheehy-Skeffington.
In 1916, they took part in the Easter Rising with the Irish Volunteers (see also the Irish Volunteer recruitment poster from 1913). They helped occupy the General Post Office on Sackville Street (now O’Connell Street) during the Rising. James Connolly was commander of the rebel forces in Dublin during the Rising. He was executed by British firing squad some weeks after for his part. The surviving ICA members were interned in Frognach in Wales until 1919. Many of the ICA later joined the Irish Republican Army. The ICA’s last public appearance was in 1947 to accompany the funeral procession of founder James Larkin.
