The theme of the essay possibly set by the schoolmaster. The essay was awarded 310 marks out of 600; the verdict: "Fair, but too short. Punctuate carefully, & look after your writing which is weak'".

The essay came from Michael's sister Kitty Sheridan. There is a note to the rear of the final page signed by Kitty, "March 1904 when he was 13 and I was 15-16".
