Description

The Tailteann Games, Croke Park, 1924.

The aim of the Tailteann Games was to revive Irish sport and culture. Before the ratification of the Treaty, the Dáil in 1921 decided to resurrect the ancient games as a very public and international expression of an independent Irish nation. When the Civil War broke out the event had to be postponed. This image is of the opening day of the event finally being held in Croke Park, August, 1924. Here we see a pair of Irish Wolfhounds being taken through their paces on the opening day.
