Description
The 1798 Rebellion was organised by 'The United Irishmen' led by Protestants Theobald Wolfe Tone and Henry Joy McCracken. The aim was to unite Catholics, Prostestants and Presbyterians to provide a united front to overthrow British rule in Ireland.
The Battle of Vinegar Hill was an engagement during the rebellion when over 13,000 British soldiers launched an attack on Vinegar Hill outside Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, the largest camp and headquarters of the United Irishmen. It marked a turning point in the rebellion, as it was the last attempt by the United Irishmen to hold and defend ground against the British military. The battle was actually fought in two locations, on Vinegar Hill itself and in the streets of nearby Enniscorthy.
