A wrought iron pike head, as used by the United Irishmen in the 1798 Rebellion. The United Irishmen ordered all members who could not afford firearms to equip themselves with pikes. Charges by massed ranks of pike wielding men were the main rebel tactic. The shaft is pierced for fixing to a handle which was usually up to 12 feet in length.
