I'm very pleased to loan the cutlery used by Michael Collins during his final meal to Michael Collins House museum in Clonakilty. Cork Public Museum will share the display of the cutlery during the winter months. Pictured: Helen Collins (grand-niece of Michael Collins), Frank O'Flynn (Mayor of County Cork) and Jamie Murphy (Michael Collins House General Manager) About the Cutlery. This knife, fork and spoon set were kept by the manager of the Eldon Hotel in Skibbereen for posterity after Collins' dinner there shortly before his return journey to Cork city on August 22nd 1922, a journey that Collins would not complete. After Collins' death at Béal na Bláth the manager presented the cutlery, framed and mounted on a background of a shamrock, a tricolour and a Fenian flag to Collins' fiancée, Kitty Kiernan. Following Kitty's untimely death in 1945, the cutlery was passed on to her sister Maud. Later, it was passed down through Maud's husband's family, Gearóid O'Sullivan, who raised the Irish flag over the GPO during the 1916 Rising. I acquired the cutlery six months ago. This is the first time they have been on public display. I'm hopeful I'll be in a position to keep the cutlery on loan to both museums in Cork for public viewing for an extended period of time. Both museums are well worth a visit if you have the opportunity.
