Noel Redding of the Jimi Hendrix Experience & De Barras pub
Noel Redding, bass player for the Jimi Hendrix Experience who relocated to Clonakilty in the early 70's and made this local pub his musical home. In the 1960's, Redding was part of The Jimi Hendrix Experience trio. He moved here with his partner, Carol Appleby, from Los Angeles in 1972 and brought musical glamour to this corner of West Cork. Although he largely withdrew from the music industry, he played in De Barras pub weekly, holding the Friday night residency for 20 years until his passing. Hall of famers who traveled to Clonakilty to join Noel’s sessions at De Barras included David Bowie and Paul McCartney. Redding's final live performance took place at De Barras pub before he passed away in Clonakilty at the age of 57 in 2003. Redding left an array of photographs and memorabilia to the pub after his death. Among the old signage and antiques you'd find in any old pub, the walls are packed with photos of Redding alongside some of the biggest names in music. Highly recommend a visit here if you're ever in West Cork. They have a music session here nightly. Great pint too... More photos: http://rb.gy/g82up
