O’Donoghue’s, Merrion Row, Dublin
O’Donoghue’s. A classic boozer located on Merrion Row just off Stephens Green. Built in 1789 as a grocery store, in 1934 it began operating as a pub when purchased by Paddy and Maureen O’Donoghue. It was during this time it became famous for nightly traditional Irish music sessions. It is where the The Dubliners were founded and began performing in the early 60’s. Christy Moore, The Fureys and Phil Lynott have also played here. Fantastic portraits of The Dubliners hang to the right of the entrance where the nightly sessions are played. Dessie Hynes from Longford bought the bar from Paddy and Maureen O'Donoghue in 1977 and ran the pub with his family for the next 11 years. In 1988 O’Donoghue’s was purchased by publican, Oliver Barden. Oliver is still the proprietor today and continues to run the pub with his family and staff. This pub hasn't changed since the 60's in terms of decor and that is a real good thing. Traditional Irish Music seven nights a week and Saturday & Sunday afternoons.Sound staff, lovely fresh pints and fantastic atmosphere! Cant really go wrong. The attached photo was taken in 1985.
