The Real 'House of Guinness'

16 Oct, 2025
House of Guinness, James Street, Dublin

Arthur Guinness built this house in 1799 on Dublin’s Thomas Street, just steps from the brewery gates. From here, he watched his empire grow. Exports were crossing the Irish Sea, his famous 9,000 year lease at St. James’s Gate was secured and Guinness had become the biggest brewery in Dublin.

He lived in the house with his wife, Olivia Whitmore. Together they had 21 children, a huge family, even for the 18th century. Not all survived, but the Guinness family left a lasting legacy.

Few people realise Arthur Guinness once lived right here on Thomas Street. The house is one of Dublin’s last surviving links to the man himself, often overlooked by visitors to the brewery.
