‘Heartbreak Pier’ in Cobh. This 150 year old pier served as the departure point for 1.5 million Irish emigrants bound for America and Canada. This photo captures the scene of April 11th, 1912, with 123 individuals awaiting passage on the Titanic. The 1st and 2nd class passengers are on the balcony, and the 3rd class below. Cobh marked the final stop for the Titanic, and these individuals in the image constituted its last passengers. Sadly, 79 out of the 123 met a tragic fate. Today, the former White Star Line building has been transformed into a pub and restaurant, featuring an upstairs tour. The pier is now a beer garden, offering an opportunity for a beverage while gazing out to sea. This pier carries a deep emotional weight. Across generations, it stood as the poignant farewell point, where emigrants said their final goodbye to their family and home, marking their final steps on Irish soil. The pub is called the Titanic Bar & Grill and they need some memorabilia on the walls here!
